Werner Pernambuco bows are ideal for advancing players beyond their fourth year of student that can discern subtleties in sound and bow response. Pernambuco is the best wood available for bow-making, and Werner uses only select woods that have been perfectly aged and seasoned.
For centuries Pernambuco has been the preferred wood for bow-making – it’s a dense, heavy wood that offers the perfect mix of strength, stability, springiness, and responsiveness. The quality and price of Pernambuco bows can vary dramatically – much depends on the skill and reputation of the maker(s). The quality of the raw materials plays a role as well.

Werner Pernambuco bows are handmade in Bubenreuth, Germany from select Pau Brasil (pernambuco) that has been perfectly aged and seasoned for approximately 30 years.

Each stick is evaluated for its acoustic potential and graded “4, 5, or 6” to signify “good, better, and best”. Werner Pernambuco bows are thus available in three different models, each with its own distinguishing features:

  • Model #4 Round stick – Fully-lined ebony frog, Parisian eye – nickel silver mounted – stamped “G. Werner”

  • Model #5 Octagonal stick - Fully-lined ebony frog, single eye – nickel silver mounted – stamped “G. Werner”

  • Model #6 Octagonal stick – Fully-lined ebony frog, Parisian eye – nickel silver mounted – stamped “G. Werner”

Available in full size only for violin, viola, cello, and bass (French or German grip).

Wooden bows are highly susceptible to changes in humidity and can warp if not cared for properly.
